“Great songs write themselves. You’re just being led by the nose, or the ears. The skill is not to interfere with it too much. Ignore intelligence, ignore everything; just follow it where it takes you. You really have no say in it, and suddenly there it is: “Oh, I know how this goes,” and you can’t believe it, because you think that nothing comes like that. You think, where did I steal this from? No, no, that’s original—well, about as original as I.”

“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.”

Bad Santa: The Improbable Holiday Classic | Vanity Fair
All good Christmas movies have morals as heavy as a boat of gravy…[b]ut 2003’s Bad Santa, directed by Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World), imparts only the following: “The world ain’t fair and you gotta take what you need when you can get it. You gotta learn to stand up for yourself. You’re gonna have to quit being a pussy and kick these kids in the balls or something—or don’t. Shit, I don’t care. Just leave me the hell out of it.” Yet somehow, this ill-mannered, uncompromising piece of nastiness has snuck into the Christmas canon and come to be regarded as a classic, perhaps the first since 1983’s oft-quoted A Christmas Story.
Nice little profile of my favorite Christmas movie. I watch it every year, no matter what. My top five (off the top of my head, and in no particular order):
- Bad Santa
- Christmas Vacation
- Christmas Story
- Elf
- Love Actually

“…you can not choose your audience. Once you make something and release it or publish it, you lose control of it. The more ambiguous it is, the less command you have. You can not control how people meet your work if it requires them to contribute something of themselves to complete it. (And, I’d say that the best creative output requires us to project something of ourselves into the work to complete it. So, the better quality the work, the less control you have of its effect on people.) You can’t choose what resonates. You can’t choose who it resonates with. You can cue your Creep reference here.”

Frank Chimero on the 10th anniversary of Kid A. (As I read about his experience buying the CD after 7th period at a Sam Goody and driving home, I thought, “wait he can’t possibly be my age, he’s gotta be older…” but yes, it’s true, and in fact, he’s a year younger than me. Goddamn, that guy is good! Follow Friday.)

Andy Warhol, Coke Bottles
What’s great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.

Mental Health Awareness Song of the Day:
Fix You (Coldplay)
When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I
Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Greetings from the land of complete thoughts and a strong sense of self worth!
A lot of you are wondering why I decided to quit Twitter. And I’m ready to explain it to you now that I’m off Twitter and can explain anything in a salient manner. It occurred to me that since the invocation of…
